MAGIC

ABOUT MAGIC

Magic users are technically magicians, though this word is seen as archaic as it has been replaced by the shortened term "mage." Several further classifications break down mages: wizards conduct magic through physical objects of their choice, such as a wand, staff, book, crystal, or even a tree branch; sorcerers (and sorceresses) take the far more dangerous path of wielding magic without conduction.

Witches- a term for any gender- wield magic for the sole reasons of harming others and self-benefit. They are known to work in cauldrons and poisons. Finally, warlocks are mages who have sworn their lives to the service of a god or gods, in exchange for something, such as power.

THE MAGIC PROBLEM

If magic is real, and if magic is so powerful, then why doesn't everyone use magic?

Anyone can be an artist with enough time and effort. But why isn't everyone in the world an artist? Some people lack the dedication or interest. Some are preoccupied with work or home life. Not everyone can afford to go to art school, or a magic university. Even if they could, they might be inclined to commission art instead, or hire the services of a mage instead.

LEARNING

Learning magic is like learning a different language- difficult when attempted alone, but easier when fostered through community. It is also dangerous when attempted alone, as certain creatures are drawn to magical energy. Those who grow up in societies which practice magic will become fluent in the same magic as their community.

Parents can pass down magic to their children as well, teaching them bits and pieces, but the best teacher is an experienced mage such as a professor at a university of magic, where students learn alongside one another. Unfortunately, outside of a university setting, teaching is hard, and not many are willing to take someone under their wing for multiple years.

As with the process of language learning, when one language is learned, the learner carries on active and passive skills to the next languages that they study. This applies to magical learning as well. Spells are learned progressively, so it is impossible for a beginner mage to cast a legendary spell.
