A limited number of magical books exists, due to several reasons. Firstly, not everyone has the ability to read and write, which limits production to seasoned mages themselves and literate scribes in temples; secondly, books with magical knowledge are especially expensive if they are for sale; and thirdly, they may fall into the hands of private collectors with wealthy backgrounds.
The libraries of magical universities have plentiful collections for use by students and professors. The censorship of any information pertaining to the Dark Arts by the Althurian Empire contributed to the loss of such books.
GRIMOIRE — A spellbook that has been purposefully written in a secret code or secret language to deter others from uncovering its knowledge. Of course, a smart and experienced enough mage might be able to decode one.
SPELLBOOK — Spellbooks give the obvious advantage of being able to read spells or ritual chants directly from a book. However, not every spellbook will provide clear instructions, and older spellbooks might require days of study to understand.
